The Monster Hunter Outlanders monster list combines returning large monsters, new Radiant versions, and the original Elder Dragon Ruger Aidal. The pre-launch closed-beta roster lists 39 large-monster entries, counting normal monsters, subspecies, Radiant variants, and Ruger Aidal separately. That is a beta and pre-release roster count, not a guarantee that every entry is immediately available to every account at the international launch.
Use the names below to identify a target, then read the corresponding hunt in your client for access conditions and rewards. This October 28, 2026 snapshot does not establish a complete release-day weakness chart, drop database, habitat map, or unlock order. Do not choose an elemental weapon from a weakness value copied from another Monster Hunter game.
Returning large monsters and their listed variants
The following table pairs the ordinary or subspecies name with the Radiant name included in the pre-launch roster. Each row represents a naming relationship, not a shared unlock condition or identical set of attacks.

Ruger Aidal is a separate original Elder Dragon entry rather than an extra row inferred by adding Radiant to a familiar name. Likewise, the absence of a Radiant entry beside Kushala Daora or Nergigante in this table is a limit of this roster; it is not a claim about every future update.
Read the full name before accepting a hunt. Black Diablos is distinct from Diablos, Pink Rathian is distinct from Rathian, and a Radiant prefix identifies another version again. Shortening all of those names to one family can make a material plan or group invitation ambiguous.

The historical test HUD identifies Rathian directly; the returning monster is separate from its Radiant roster label.
Understand what the roster count includes
The reported 39-entry large-monster roster can be understood as 20 returning normal or subspecies entries, 18 named Radiant entries, and Ruger Aidal. The normal and Radiant forms are counted separately, even when they share a recognizable body shape and part of a name.
That counting method answers a catalogue question, not a progression question. It does not tell you how many hunts are unlocked when you first create a character, which monsters share a locale, how many quest versions exist, or how long it takes to reach an Elder Dragon.
A regional service or later update can also expose content differently. When comparing a roster with a friend's client, preserve the exact monster name, regional service, game version, and activity. A missing hunt may be a progression or availability question rather than evidence that a similar monster name was a typo.
For planning, record the target from the active recipe or hunt screen. If your goal is a crafting material, an appearance in a trailer is insufficient evidence that a particular activity drops it. Check the reward list and any part requirement attached to the activity you can actually enter.
Radiant monsters require a fresh reading of the fight
Radiant monsters are associated with Aesoland's Radiantite and have altered appearances, strengths, and attacks. They are not simply a color option for the ordinary monster. A familiar silhouette can help with recognition while still leaving you unprepared for a changed sequence or additional attack.
Pre-launch examples illustrate the difference. Radiant Rathalos is associated with intensified fire, while Radiant Anjanath can use Radiantite in its attacks. Radiant Diablos emphasizes its reinforced horns, and Radiant Kulu-Ya-Ku can use excavated Radiantite as a weapon. These examples describe the revealed identities; they do not supply a complete move list or damage table for the release build.
When encountering a Radiant target, begin with observation:
- Confirm the full name rather than relying on the base monster's outline.
- Watch the opening attacks before committing to a long sequence.
- Identify the movement or effect that differs from the normal form.
- Reposition around that action and use an opening you can actually reach.
- Read any special target prompt or state shown by the current hunt.
Beta descriptions include a Radiant Rage state and a targetable radiant part associated with interrupting it. Treat the hunt's current prompts as the guide to that state; this roster does not establish a universal damage threshold, exact timing window, or identical solution for every Radiant monster.

The illustration identifies the Radiant Rathalos appearance; it does not demonstrate attack timing or a tested hunt strategy.
Keep Elder Dragons separate from other roster labels
Kushala Daora, Nergigante, and Ruger Aidal are the Elder Dragons named in the pre-launch coverage. Elder Dragon is a classification, while Radiant describes another aspect of a monster's identity. Do not use those labels as interchangeable shortcuts for difficulty or assume that every unusual-looking monster belongs to the same category.
Ruger Aidal is original to Outlanders. Its enormous luminous wings and second-sun imagery distinguish it from a returning monster with a familiar name. The reveal connects it with the mysteries of Aesoland and shows an intense release of light and heat, but that presentation does not establish phase percentages, a complete attack rotation, or the equipment needed to unlock the hunt.
For Kushala Daora and Nergigante, their appearance in the pre-launch roster does not import another game's weaknesses, break thresholds, rewards, or recommended weapon. Look for the Outlanders hunt's own information before organizing a farming or equipment plan around a remembered series matchup.
Use an Elder Dragon's dedicated hunt description when available. A roster can tell you the name belongs in the game's revealed catalogue; it cannot replace the actual requirements for entering or completing that encounter.

The original Elder Dragon is visually distinct from a Radiant version of a returning monster.
Subspecies are distinct from Radiant forms
The returning roster includes Black Diablos and Pink Rathian as subspecies. Their names should be preserved in searches, recipes, and group plans. A subspecies is not another spelling of the base monster, and the pre-launch list also contains Radiant versions of those subspecies.
This creates several names within the same family. Diablos, Black Diablos, Radiant Diablos, and Radiant Black Diablos are separate listed entries. Rathian, Pink Rathian, Radiant Rathian, and Radiant Pink Rathian likewise should not be compressed into one target.
When someone asks for help, confirm the complete target rather than discussing the family's normal version by default. The same care applies to images: a recognizable Diablos does not automatically illustrate Black Diablos, and a normal Rathian image cannot demonstrate an altered Radiant attack.
Small wildlife belongs in a separate list
Small-monster and wildlife names in the Outlanders catalogue include Apceros, Aptonoth, Felyne, Gajalaka, Gajau, Girros, Hornetaur, Jagras, Kelbi, Kestodon, Mernos, Noios, Raphinos, and Vespoid. These names are separate from the 39 large-monster count above.
The broader catalogue also names Radiant Gajau, Radiant Jagras, Radiant Kestodon, Radiant Mernos, and Radiant Vespoid. Do not assume that every small creature has a Radiant counterpart simply because some do, or that a creature's presence establishes a specific material drop, spawn location, or collection route.
Check spelling when moving between the two lists. Girros and Great Girros are different roster names, as are Jagras and Great Jagras. A material request or hunt objective may use one specific name, so a search result for the larger monster does not necessarily answer a question about its smaller relative.
Rutaco and Trillan are also part of Aesoland's creature identity, but the game introduces them as Buddies. Do not add companion names to a large-monster hunt count simply because they appear in the same world. The role a creature plays matters as much as its visual design when deciding which catalogue or activity to inspect.
Turn a monster name into a useful hunting plan
First identify the exact entry, including its subspecies name or Radiant prefix. Then choose the activity actually shown in the current client and compare its objective with your reason for hunting. Practicing a fight, pursuing a crafting material, and seeking a particular reward are different goals even when they involve the same monster.
If you are preparing equipment, avoid an unverified element chart. If you are locating a target, use the current map and activity information rather than habitat labels borrowed from a different game. If you are joining friends, compare the complete hunt name and access requirements before assuming that seeing the monster in a catalogue means everyone can enter it.
During the fight, keep part selection separate from a guaranteed break. Lock-on helps identify a selected part, but weapon reach and positioning still determine whether an attack connects. Read the target's current movement and any displayed part or special-state prompt, then adjust your position instead of treating a roster description as an automatic combat solution.
After the hunt, compare the actual reward with the recipe or objective that sent you there. That final check turns a monster catalogue into a repeatable plan: one clearly named target, one applicable activity, and a verified reason to return.
